JHS Class of ’67 planning 50th reunion in June ‘17

By Jane Fusco

It was 1967, the year that The Beatles released the “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Heats Club Band” album, the American Basketball Association formed, Elvis and Priscilla got married and Hair premiered off Broadway.

On June 16, 1967, Johnston High School’s senior class celebrated their graduation day.

On Friday, June 16, 2017 – 50 years to the day – the golden anniversary class will gather once again to kick-off a two-day reunion weekend.

“We marched to good ole ‘Pomp and Circumstance’ and then traveled our separate journeys to find a productive and hopefully happy life,” said Donald Iafrate, class of ’67 president and one of the organizers of the reunion.

“We will reconvene to reminisce and rejoice in all those memories and discoveries,” that, for some, began in elementary school, he said.

This class of ’67 was the second to the last class to attend the combined high school and middle school as a double session school system in what is now the Nicholas A. Ferri Middle School building. The students attended freshman year in the afternoon session and sophomore, junior and senior years in the morning session.

The new high school on Cherry Hill Road was under construction at the time of their ’67 graduation. The class of 1969 entered the new school as seniors and was the first class to graduate from the newly built high school. The class of 1972 was the high school’s charter class, attending grades 9 through 12 in the new high school.

The reunion committee sent an email to class members with known addresses to save the dates and that specific details about weekend’s events would be forthcoming. The committee is seeking information to connect with any class members they were unable to reach.
