Wicked’ to the fourth power

Famed show makes another stop at PPAC

By Laurence J. Sasso, Jr.

For those who can’t get enough of the powerful musical Wicked, and they are legion as attested to by the fact the show is coming to Rhode Island for its fourth run, September will be a happy month.

The production, which has been called “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster and Providence’s most popular musical” by its publicists, will be on stage at the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) for three weeks – September 21 to October 8 – rather than the more typical one week run.

A media fact sheet reports that “Wicked has grossed a combined total of nearly $2.75 billion for its North American companies alone.”

Created by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman and based on the best-selling 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is the winner of over 100 international major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards. The musical is directed by two-time Tony award winner Joe Mantello.

A media release from the producers describes the musical as a “surprising tale of an unlikely friendship between two women in the Land of Oz. Wicked tells the untold story of the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good, long before Dorothy drops in. Elphaba, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. Glinda is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. The remarkable odyssey of how these unexpected friends changed each other’s lives for good has made Wicked one of the world’s most popular musicals.”

According to PPAC President J.L. “Lynn” Singleton, “We are pleased to have this phenomenal show ‘fly back’ to Providence for a fourth time. Wicked will also be the opening show for our 2016/2017 Broadway Season.”
