Top 5 Neighborhood Crime Watch Tips from the Smithfield Police Department

Call the Police: If you see suspicious activity, report it to the police as it is happening. Too often, residents wait and call hours later. It is much better to report suspicious activity as it happens; that way police officers can respond while the activity is ongoing.
Lock Up: Secure your home by locking doors and windows. Keep vehicles locked, even if they are parked where you think it’s safe. Do not leave valuables in vehicles.
Lighting: Leave exterior lights on to illuminate your yard and driveway. Most criminals try to stay undetected. By lighting the areas surrounding your home, you make your home and vehicles visible to attentive neighbors.
Check on Neighbors: If you have neighbors who may be elderly, check on them to see if they need anything. Other neighbors may work long hours. Get to know your neighbors. Talk to them about current events and share emergency contact information with them.
House Checks: The Smithfield Police Department does provide house check service. Simply call the police station at 231-2500 and request that your residence be placed on the house checklist. The dispatcher will request your name, address, telephone number, dates that you will be away, and the name and number of an emergency contact person. The house is then checked frequently by the patrol division until you return. Upon your return, you are asked to contact the police station and we will verify that you have returned and remove your residence from the house checklist.
